Repositories

  • Mason OER Metafinder — Based in George Mason University in the United States, this tool performs a simultaneous search across different sources of open educational materials. Other than major OER repositories, it also searches sites such as HathiTrust where some OER may be found.
  • OER Commons — OER Commons was launched in 2007 by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) in the United States.  In a brave new world of learning, OER content is made free to use or share on OER Commons, and in some cases, to change and share again, made possible through licensing, so that both teachers and learners can share what they know.
  • Wikiversity — Wikiversity is a Wikimedia Foundation project devoted to learning resources, learning projects, and research for use in all levels, types, and styles of education from pre-school to university, including professional training and informal learning. Wikiversity invites teachers, students, and researchers to create open educational resources and collaborative learning communities.
  • e Commonwealth of Learning — The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is an intergovernmental organization created by Commonwealth Heads of Government to encourage the development and sharing of open learning/distance education knowledge, resources and technologies. COL is helping developing nations improve access to quality education and training.
  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) — The DOAJ was launched in 2003 with 300 open access journals. The database now contains over 15 000 peer-reviewed open access journals covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, arts and humanities. Open access journals from all countries and in all languages are welcome to apply for inclusion.  DOAJ is an independent non-profit organisation managed by Infrastructure Services for Open Access C.I.C. (IS4OA), a community interest company, based in the United Kingdom. All DOAJ services are free of charge including being indexed. All data is freely available.
  • Open Library eCampus Ontario — Funded by the Government of Ontario, Canada, this collection features textbooks that map to the top enrolled subjects in Ontario. Some textbooks are revised Canadian editions, while many include faculty reviews or links to supplementary resources (e.g. quizzes, text banks, slides, video, etc.).
  • Manitoba Open Textbook Initiative — Campus Manitoba in Canada launched the Manitoba Open Textbook Initiative in 2015. The goal of the initiative is to make higher education more accessible by reducing students costs through the use of openly licensed textbooks in Manitoba.
  • BC Campus Open Textbook Collection — Funded by the British Columbia (B.C.) Ministry of Advanced Education, this is a major collection in Canada since 2012 and features open textbooks created or adapted by B.C. faculty. Many of them meet accessibility requirements and/or include supplementary materials (e.g. quizzes, text banks, slides, video, etc.).
  • SOL*R (Shareable Online Learning Resources) — SOL*R is a repository service provided by BC Campus in Canada that allows educators to access free online learning resources. It facilitates sharing, discovery, reuse, and remixing of a growing collection of content created by BC post-secondary educators.  SOL*R includes learning resources from a wide variety of disciplines and subject areas. Resources range from open textbooks, individual learning activities and tools, all the way to full programs.
  • MERLOT — Maintained by the California State University System in the United States, this collection has over 40,000 OER of all types including open textbooks, videos, assignments, quizzes, and full online courses. The content is contributed and used by an international education community.
  • PHET Open Math and Science Interactions/Simulations — Founded in 2002 by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman, the PHET Interactive Simulations project at the University of Colorado Boulder in the United States creates free interactive math and science simulations. PHET simulations are based on extensive education research and engage students through an intuitive, game-like environment where students learn through exploration and discovery.
  • AMSER: Applied Math and Science Education Repository — AMSER is a portal of educational resources and services built specifically for use by those in Community and Technical Colleges but free for anyone to use. AMSER is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of the National Science Digital Library in the United States.
  • OASIS – Developed by the State University of New York (SUNY) system in the United States, OASIS stands for Openly Available Sources Integrated Search.  It searches across many sources with open content.
  • Open Stax — OpenStax is part of Rice University in the United States.  Open Stax publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed, openly licensed college textbooks that are absolutely free online and low cost in print. Open Stax has also developed a low-cost, research-based courseware that gives students the tools they need to complete their course the first time around, and a new online math homework system with step-level feedback.
